I am starting a new thread to avoid hijacking WoodMad’s thread. TonyD – I would love more details on Sketchup, is it worth the $400 pricetag? I’ve used AutoCAD LT for years and I’m very familiar with that product, but 3d is difficult (if not impossible) with it. For Sketchup… I’ve downloaded the trial version but I haven’t used yet. I would love your 2 cents on it. Thanks Joe |

I've only been using SU a couple of months and still learning. But the wood look is a no-brainer that I was able to figure out quickly without even consulting the instructions. Basically you get a jpeg of any piece of wood you want and add it to the pallette of colors/textures in the model using the material editor. Then select that color and start clicking on all the surfaces you want to apply it to.
Waddaya mean it wont fit through the door?
Joe,
with the experience you have in Autocad lite, working with SU should not be a problem. Just try it and you will be convinced.
How's the printing capabilities? easy on the printers I tested.
Is it easy to apply the "wood" look to the 3d renderings? also easy.
Is the dimensioning easy?yep
How about adding text?also no problem
Tony
With your experience with sketup, can you let us know what you feel the limitations are when it comes to furniture and cabinet designing.
Does it calculate measurements and print them out or do you need to enter the measurements manually?

It's somewhere in-between. It will calculate the dimension for you, but only at places you choose to have dimensioned. It doesn't blindly supply all dimensions. You have to click on the dimension tool, then drag your mouse from point A to point B to tell SU what you want measured. It then calculates the length and draws the dimension on the model - pretty much the same way you would do on graph paper with a pencil.Waddaya mean it wont fit through the door?
Thanks,
Most of the time that is what I would want anyway.

Joe, did you check out Turbo Cad? Hilmar
