importing from 3d warehouse

I imported a mid century chair model from Chloe A . It was built using group and not componets. I tried out lining the arm and making a componet but it didn't work. Do I have to just re make the model or are there any tricks to make componets from a model using groups?

Do a search on mid century chair  and look for her model

Tom, I had a look at that (post #180122, reply #1 of 4)

Tom, I had a look at that model. It's a low-poly thing intended to be used in as an interior design piece and not as a plan for building it. It's also poorly executed with reversed faces and some bad geometry. The entire side assembly is drawn as if it was carved from a big hunk of wood. I would question how accurately it has been drawn, too. Considering the units and coarse precision that were used, I expect most dimensions would need some adjustment.

It could be modified but I suspect it would be easier to redraw it. You could use the chair as a reference but I wouldn't reuse any of the geometry.

As a general response to converting groups to components, right click on the group and select  Make Component from the context menu. In a case such as this chair, you could make one side a component (this by itself won't improve the model) and delete the other side group. then copy the first and flip it.

Thanks for responding. After sleeping on it . I came up with the same solution. Another thought tough:

if the whole chair is a componet ,and I outline a part without putting the component into edit mode  and then hide the componet. Why doesn't the outline still exsist?

Never mind, that did work but the original model isn't geometrically correct. I will just redo it.

Glad you got it sorted. To (post #180122, reply #4 of 4)

Glad you got it sorted.

To answer the question, though, I guess I'd have to see the SKP file.

IFthe model was done with correct dimensions in the first place, I wouldn't trace the geometry. I would copy the geometry out of the components/groups and use the copied geometry as the foundations for new components.
