read once that you can fill a small crack with sawdust from that piece of wood and dewaxed shellac. Can you just use regular shellac as well??

I've never tried sawdust and shellac, a paste of sawdust and white glue works well but doesn't take a finish worth a darn. Try it on a piece of scrap first to test how well you can finish it.
