TS Dust Collection - to enclose or not to enclose?
TS Dust Collection - to enclose or not to enclose? (post #169282)

I have a Ridgid TS3650 with the built in dust port on the saw guard beneath the table. I started to build a ramped enclosure beneath the table but now I wonder if it is a wise choice. My dust collection comes from a Ridgid shop-vac w/ a Dust Deputy; the best I've ever had but by no means a high powered setup. Given the draw that my system has is it really a wise idea to build an enclosure that moves said draw further from the source of sawdust? Or am I better served keeping the factory setup? Looking for suggestions here, thanks in advance.

TS dust (post #169282, reply #1 of 2)
I don't have the same saw and the TS3650 manual doesn't appear to show your original dust-collection setup. Thus, I'm not sure about the particulars. I'm guessing, though, that a collection point behind and below the blade catches only a portion of the dust. Partially enclosing the back and fully-enclosing the bottom with angled panels (think square funnel) with a collection port at the bottom may, or may not improve things. Remember, you'll need air inlets of approximately the same size as your collection port to provide air flow. That's probably not an issue, as you'll need to have an opening at the back for the drive belt. My guess would be that you'd still have dust collecting on the upper surfaces of the trunion that would require periodic removal. The only way to know is to try it and see what results. I'd make the enclosure parts easy to remove, though.

If you don't have the time to do it right the first time, when will you ever have the time to fix it ?
