Help needed on home-built dust collector
I recently purchased the Hammer N4400 band saw and the Hammer A3-31 12 inch jointer planer combination machine - they are great!
I was using a 1 hp Grizzly portable dust collector - that was no longer sufficient.
So, I built a box, took off the inlet cover, mounted the motor on the box and mounted a 4 inch inlet on the side of the box.
Here's my problem: when the grizzly dust bag is off (just to check suction) the power seems very strong. When I attach the bag, which captures only big particles, suction falls in half.
Would buying a cyclone help? What type of filter would be better for cleaning the exhaust and maintaining the highest CFM?
Thanks,
Chris

canister filter (post #165876, reply #1 of 2)
A canister filter will probably deliver higher CFM than a bag. Wynn Environmental sells aftermarket kits for various types of dust collectors and probably has something that will work for your application. www.wynnenv.com
Switching to a pleated filter (post #165876, reply #2 of 2)
Switching to a pleated filter might help but it may only last until the pleats fill with the smaller particles. A cyclone would be a vast improvement over a conventional bag system but you need to work the math to get the most out of it. Bill Pentz has some great information on his sight, I belive that Onieda and Penn Industries offer design assitance on their sites as well.
