From a secret location, the red boards was a 2x8 joist,  cleaned up nicely.   Those oak pieces on the saw are from a couple of rafters, also cleaned up.  All of this was from an old garage that was torn down.   Plenty more to "clean up" in the pile...

Good Find (post #169181, reply #1 of 5)

Nice stuff you have -  I got lucky today at a house sale - a 15 in. wide x 7/8 x 12 foot long ash board for $ 5.00. You'll find me in the garage when the others are tearing the house apart.

more questions.     Oak or Ash, or?  These are from some rafters I got from a garage tear down (FREE!).  These were a full 2" thick by 4-3/4"  wide.   I just cleaned up three of them tonight.   I still have a truck load to go through.   There seems to be a couple 6 x 6s under the pile, as well.

Question,  Oak, or Ash, or ?????

Generally speaking, Oak will show medulary rays on all surfaces, Ash will not.

A close sharp close up photo of the face grain would be helpful when seeking  to ID a species. Not trying to be negative here but rather helpful. I would urge you that if you can, obtain a copy of Bruce Hoadley's book "Identifying Wood". It has a boatload of info and great photos to help you identify these treasures you keep unearthing.

We can get you close with good photos on this forum but we can't get exact like you can looking at end grain with magnification. It will open up a whole new field of info to you.

Thinking Ash then (post #169181, reply #4 of 5)

as there are no ray flacks showing in the face grain.   LOt of tannic acid though, every nail hole is black.  At least there were no bugs in these.  Can't wait to see what else is in that pile.....
