Old Qsawn white oak veneer

BillBronaugh's picture

I recently was given a large box of 15 year old q sawn wo veneer and it is some very very nice looking stuff as far as the grain goes but it has been rolled up in a box for all of those years as well. I have had it out for about a month between some sheets of plywood to try to flatten it a bit but as soon as I take it out, it rolls back up. Also, it looks sort of "wavy" , for lack of a better term. My questions are, how can I get it to lay flat and can veneer be steamed? Like I said, it is some very nice stuff and  I would love to use it but in it's current state I don't know if I should. I have 15 pieces that are 15" wide and 12' long. It is also very thick for veneer, at leaste as far as what I always thought of as veneer.  Thanks for any help/advice.

I'm not a veneer person, but until one comes along, here are a couple of thoughts.

Fifteen years of rolled-up memory may take some "re-training" of the veneer sheets. I seem to recall mention of a solution that can be applied that acts to relax the rolled-up memory and/or wavy veneer. I can't help with either a product name or a usage procedure, though.A good veneering book should have some coverage of the issue, though, since rolling veneer for storage seems to be fairly common practice.
