Birch Log fungus

Hi

I have logs from a Birch tree that fell last winter due to a storm. The logs have been outside until a few weeks ago, when I cut them up into smaller lengths and brought them into the garage. Now at the end of each log there is a fungus growing. Also on the largest log, there is fungus growing on the outside. I've read that I should paint the ends with laytex paint to prevent checking. Will this also prevent the fugus or is the wood only good for the fireplace.
