Walnut Bed
Walnut Bed (post #159311)
Walnut and resawn crotch veneer comprise most of the bed construction with the exception of the quarter-sawn red oak ("QSRO") framed by the crest rail and the arched panels. The arches are veneered on a walnut substrate from the same boards with crotch graining and were bookmatched as closely as possible to complement the arching grain pattern in the panels. The QSRO is dyed with several coats of pecan. The crest rail is laimnated walnut. The photos do not show it well but the legs are also laminated to induce a slight flair.
The finish is a base of BLO/tung/turp and varnish followed by wipe on varnish and wax.
The remainder of the bedroom suite currently under construction includes a tall chect, low boy chest and 2 nightstands. The carcasses and tops are walnut and the side panels in straight-grained QSRO and the drawer fronts are highly-figured QSRO. The oak will also be dyed pecan.
Critiques are welcomed.

Very nice, Doug. I would (post #159311, reply #1 of 5)
Very nice, Doug. I would remove those white pillows hiding the beautiful grain if I were you. I built myself a mission-style walnut bed with bookmatched slats and every morning, I wake up, roll over and smile when I see the grain. That's how to start a day! I like to give some critique, but I couldn't find anything.

Lovely (post #159311, reply #2 of 5)
Well designed and well executed, Doug. I'll be anxious to see the other pieces when you finish them.
Thanks for the complement (post #159311, reply #4 of 5)
Thanks for the complement Ralph. I too am anxious to see the other peices :-)
The rest of the bedroom suite is becoming a larger than life project since I am also making a duplicate set for one of our sons. His set will be all QSRO while ours uses a combo of walnut and QSRO. Since most of the really hard work is in the design, planning and layout, I figured that that it wouldn't be that much extra efffort to do a "two-fer." Well, so far that is holding true except I forgot about much room all of that furniture will require once assemble begins. I may have to assemble and finish in stages. We'll see.

Not to mention keeping all of the parts properly sorted in the interim. I applaud your courage.
Perhaps the mouse's elephant-eating strategy would apply here - one bite at a time. ;-)
Thanks Chris. I understand (post #159311, reply #3 of 5)
Thanks Chris. I understand the feeling about laying there thinking "gee, that came out pretty well." I wanted to to use a /A & C design but couldn't come up with something to let me incorporate the figure unless I stayed witha single center panel - which seemed like a waste -so I ended up with what is a pretty standard overall shape to showcase the crotch walnut. While I really like the bed when I finsh the remaining pieces, which will be Greene & Greene ala Darrell Peart, I'm hoping they will play together. If not, well I have a few pieces of veneer left over and I can make another bed.
