Thank You Matt Berger (Morris Bed) (post #169219)

Hello all,

I finally found a bed design that both my wife and I liked so I built it to replace our tired old bed we had. I made it of cherry, not the white oak that would have been more "correct" for this bed. The whole bed, including the rails, is from three monster cherry boards so the color and grain couldn't match any better, even though in some of the pics it looks as though it may not match perfectly, it does. The boards were 1 1/8" x 19" x 10', they were already planed too. Needless to say, I made the components for our bed a bit more robust than was called for in the plans. Finish is just BLO and wax. The nightstand is also is cherry too of course. Found the plans in a book and modified the joinery a little and added my own pull for the single drawer, the plans called for two smaller drawer. Speaking of the pull, please tell me what you honestly think of it, I am still undecided and I have a dresser and chest to make too so I am looking for opinions on this drawer pull and whether to make more of them or go with something else.

I had a really great time making both of these pieces and want to throw out a "thank you" to Matt Berger for the great and simple design.

cherry morris bed (post #169219, reply #1 of 3)

Hello Bill ,

I also built the morris bed using red oak with a poly finish. But i must say that the cherry looks awsome.

That quality of black cherry is getting very rare where i live. Congrats on a beautiful build.

good cherry (post #169219, reply #2 of 3)

Larry, thanks for the compliment on the bed. we love it, as my wife says, " It's very solid" . The cherry I used was real nice stuff and the fellow I bought i from has a supply that is hard to believe. I am so happy I found this guy and the price is fantastic. I currently have six more of these monster boards sitting in my little "shop" waiting to be made into the remainder of the bedroom suite. They aren't as big as the ones in the bed but they are still in the 14" to 15" range.

Where are you located?

cherry (post #169219, reply #3 of 3)

Hi, Bill

I live in Cornwall Ontario Canada. The three main places i buy cherry all tell me it's hard to find cherry without sap wood.

If they do have some it's usually $9.00 or more a board foot. I wonder if its just my area or is cherry red four sides getting

rare everywhere. I have the same problem with walnut.

But on the other hand i can get ash and sugar maple for $2.50 bft at times.

Anyways happy woodworking .
