Monster black walnut slab

Mike Johnson's picture

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A slab of 160 year old black walnut (36"X46"X7" average measurements). I do not want to waste the material with plane nor my tim, and wonder if the material could be sawn into roughly three slabs about 2 inches thick. The slab has very little cracking on two of the edges and a double heart wood core (looks something like the symbol for infinity) about 6 inches apart smack in the middle--fork?
I live in the chicago area and assume there are few operations around here that could sever this into thirds,
three slabs??  POSSIBLE?

#1 , How long has the slab been cut?

#2, You should only cut the slab in half, for the yield will be better.

#3, If you air dry the slab, the rule is, 1 year for every inch.

So if it was just cut and its 7" thick it needs to dry for 7 years. Or if you have the slab cut in two it would cut the time in half. So have a sawer half it for you and check the moisture content of the slab before you cut it and then check the slab again on the new cut side.

Its important to sticker the slabs and even band or clamp them together to help them stay flat while drying.

Remember, good wines take time.
