Mission King Size Bed Frame

Bioman's picture

Awhile back I posted the first in a suite of bedroom furniture, it was a mission glass door bookcase. I just finished the second piece over the thanksgiving weekend. Here are some shots, I'm real happy with the multi-step staining process I used this time. The color is just what I wanted and the bed is rock solid in terms of construction. It is all while oak except for the slats which are poplar. It is based on the design by Matt Berger, but it is modified to be a bit over sized as my wife has some issues with her back and wanted plenty of clearance at the foot of the bed to allow easy tucking of the covers under the mattress. I think that is one of the great things about building your own furniture, the ability to customize to meet specific needs. I started work this week on a pair of nightstands....any comments are appreciated.

Very nice mission bed.    Nice design. Nice craftsmanship.   Glad you posted photos.   Sorry more people are not responding to you.  Your work is really worth looking at.  Keep on posting.

Christmas Shopping (post #160096, reply #2 of 5)

Thanks for the kind words Mel; as for other responses, I just figured that everyone is recovering from the perils of holiday shopping. :)

Mission King size bed frame (post #160096, reply #3 of 5)

I made one exactly like it, except mine is a queen size. Mine also has the CPAP hose draped over the left side of the bed. Yours looks good. Sucker is heavy,  huh!. I used bed frame angle brackets to support side rails on mine. I made a set of night stands that goes with that suite. The tops are huge, if you make the same ones I hope you have room beside your bed.

Beautiful. When I built one (post #160096, reply #5 of 5)

Beautiful. When I built one many years ago, I had bad memories of a king sized bed in a B&B that had a broken center support. It gave way in the middle of the night and had to be propped up with a pile of books underneath. So, never having been one to do things halfway, I put together four 4X4 short posts and lag bolted them at intervals down the center support. The bed was on wall to wall carpet and after the first night the center posts did not compress the carpet as much as the corner posts and there was a hill down the center of the bed. I pulled it all apart, took thin slices off the top of each center support and bolted it all together again. A couple of days later... same problem. I did this four or five more times before It finally all evened out.

There is nothing nicer than waking up every morning and seeing your own handiwork in front of your face.

Be sure to post pix of the night stands. Don't let the wife go crazy with pillows and shams and other stuff that tends to cover up too much of the beautiful headboard. I think Martha Stewart went to jail for that.
