laminating with stone dust

ajames's picture

I am interested in routing a small pattern (a wolf's footprint) onto a picture frame and filling it with stone dust.  I have never done this before and would appreciate any tips on:  how to do this;  where to get stone dust;  mistakes to avoid;  how to finish it;  how to avoid hurting the wood frame, etc.

Where to find stone dust (post #161742, reply #1 of 1)

ajames, Go to a marble or stone tile supplier and get a piece of limestone or sand stone, in a colour that you like (grays or brown tones). Use a hammer to break up the stone and continue until you have the texture you want. It will not take long, and a 12"x12" pieceof stone is much more than you need. Use a flocking adhesive to apply the stone bits to the wood. I would think that any gluethat stays tacky would do the trick. You may even try a varnish to trap the stone dust. If you are worried about damaging the wood, try a couple of test pieces. Good luck and enjoy your project.
