Entertainment Unit. (post #160296)

Hello,
Some pics of an entertainment unit I made for myself. It's made from recycled Jarrah (West Australian hardwood) with an oil finish. It's far from perfect, but I learnt plenty and am happy with it as a first cabinet project.
Thanks for looking, Grant.

Grant, If that's your first (post #160296, reply #1 of 10)
Grant,
If that's your first cabinet you should be very proud of it. I didn't see the flaws that you mentioned.

Your first cabinet project (post #160296, reply #2 of 10)
My first impression is WOW!! This is your first, you have really nice wood skills. Where did you find the recycled wood? I'm a total newbie and have yet to make my first anything. I'm really intimidated and will probably try to build something from season 1 video, maybe like the cutting board. This being your first gives me hope....:)
Great job mate!

Thanks fella's. Your both very kind, but believe me, there's plenty of flaws both in the design and execution. But, at the end of the day I am very happy with it and the missus is just relieved it's finally finished and in the house. unbdld, I work for my local power utilility and get the crossarms (the bit at the top of the power pole holding the wires up) out of the bins at work and resaw them into boards. Some are good, some are firewood. Don't be intimidated mate, I've made plenty of sawdust and firewood getting to this point and there's still tonnes to learn, just get in the workshop and have a go, it's good fun. If you can get some lessons off a good teacher that helps a lot.I have a saying stuck on my workshop wall that says something like "By all means read what the experts have to say, but don't let it get in the way of your woodworking". I try to work by that.
Good luck and thanks.
Plans? (post #160296, reply #4 of 10)
Nice work. Do you have dimensions or plans that you are willing to share? I am looking to build something similar for a new TV.
Thanks
re Plans. (post #160296, reply #5 of 10)
The design is loosely based on a design from a magazine article, the same as the one in the link attached . I modified it quite a bit to suit my own needs. Hope this helps.

Measurements? (post #160296, reply #7 of 10)
Can you give me a few measurements to work off of? The girlfriend wants a project very similar to yours, if you can give me total length, height, draw size. That would save me a lot guesswork.
Thanks
Basic dimensions. (post #160296, reply #8 of 10)
The cabinet (not including the top) is 1725mm wide, 500mm deep and 700mm high.
The top is 1825 x 550 x 40mm.
Drawer opening is 415 x 230mm.
Speaker opening is 700 x 230mm.
Top opening is 1625 x 200mm.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
P.S. We work in millimetres is Aus.
Thanks mate! (post #160296, reply #9 of 10)
Thanks mate. I guestimated and was fairly close. No problem with conversion from mm to inches (google does it automatically if you enter it in the search). Wish we used metric here (I may be the only person in the US that thinks that way).
Thanks again.
metric system (post #160296, reply #10 of 10)
No, you're not the only one. So much easier to calculate and work with. Supposedly, we are on a gradual changeover but I don't see it happening in my lifetime.
