cradle (post #169582)

A few minutes ago, searching my pix files for an example of dowel tapering to include in an answer to another post, I found these pix of a cradle I made for my first grandchild seven years ago.  It has withstood two grandchildren, one girl and one boy, and is now one big display cage for uncountable stuffed toys and dolls.

I Like This Cradle Very Much ! (post #169582, reply #1 of 6)

Some real thought and planning went in to it.

A beautiful and worth while piece of furniture with unique (to me anyway) features that are pleasing and fascinating.

I am sorry I took so long to get back to the Gallery here.

Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln ( 54° shaves )

The thought that went into it was not mine, as I bought the plans.  But they were the nicest looking plans I saw.  I had nine months warning so I had plenty of time to build it.  The whole thing piviots from the top of the curved ends, but you can tighten down the knobs to keep it from rocking if you want.  Lots of angled holes to drill kept me on my toes.

Hands To Work (post #169582, reply #3 of 6)

Yes - you know this cradle will be passed down for many generations.  You should have made two - one for your Home and the other for the Kids to keep at theirs.   Just Kidding !!

I know you were kidding but at the rate kids grow, and at the rate I work, I couldn't have built another one fast enough before the kid was out of the cradle and into a crib or bed.  It seems like yesterday I was helping my own little boy build a Cub Scout pinewood derby car.  He is about to turn 43.

Still Waiting (post #169582, reply #5 of 6)

Swen

All the best for those Grand Children - I'm still waiting for one.  Mine are not even thinking marriage yet.  Crazy new breed.  Anyway - here is a horse I made from plans 32 years ago for my first born.  Plans came from Constantines in the Bronx.  I still have the original print out. Unfortunately the horse resides in the attic until some one gets busy and delivers me a grand child, - any advice to get them going is appreciated !

advice to get them going (post #169582, reply #6 of 6)

You just have to wait it out I think.  My son moved to Colorado to ski all the time.  Unmarried at the age of 34, and not looking like there were going to be any grandkids, in desperation my wife told him to "get someone pregnant!.  I don't care if you are married anymore"  I think she was only half kidding.  Soon after he met his wife to be and she wanted to move back east and he followed her.  So a year later we got a daughter, and later two grand kids, and our son back on the east coast.

I like the rocker.  Looks like it is carved.  I'll look at it later on my wife's huge monitor

gas.
