Black Oxide Wood Screws
*
Does anyone know of a mail order source or a retail source in the NY or NJ area for black oxide wood screws? I'm having a hard time finding them and need them for decorative purposes on a project I'm working on. I know about McFeely's, but don't want to use their square drive screws. I'd appreciate any help.

Bill,
Looking in my Woodworker's Hardware Catalog, I find no slotted black screws, but a very limited selection of pan-head Phillip's head; largest size offered is #6 X 3/4". Assume you can't use black drywall screws? If you're interested, web site is www.wwhardware.com. GP.

GP,
As a matter of fact, 6 x 3/4 pan head in Phillips is just one of the sizes I'm looking for. I'm also looking for the same screw but in a no. 8. I can't use the drywall. Much thanks for your help. Bill

You can use an ordinary bright plated screw that can be purchased anywhere. File the plating off the screw head and part of the shank, then heat the screw with a torch and it will turn a beautiful antique black color. The filing also creates flats and file marks the contribute to the antique effect. I read this tip in Thomas loser's book on shaker furniture and used it on several projects. I like it.

Bill & Bill:
To make lots of blued screws quickly, I strip the zinc plating with muriatic acid (about 5 seconds or until the bubbles stop); rinse in cold water; heat in an oven in a ceramic or pyrex container to about 570 degrees; quench in oil to stop the process.
