I need advise on making oversized box joints - 1/2 x 1/2 to 3/4 x /34 - for my take on an antique steamer trunk.

If the spacing is uniform, you could make a table-saw jig to do the job with a dado set, or adapt a smaller router jig by skipping every other "finger".
For irregular spacing, marking and hand-cutting may be better. Think big, bold, Greene and Greene style.
