Alternative CHAIN MORTISER

enorman's picture

I am currently a post and beam log home. I am attaching square log posts to round log beams. Does anyone know an alternative method of making the mortisers (male and female) without using a chain mortiser? Also, how deep must the pockets be? I have 12X8 and 14/12/16'' round logs.

Thanks

Brace and bit, and a chisel (post #167586, reply #1 of 2)

Traditionally they used a brace and bit and large chisel, known as a slick, to cut the mortise.

A saw was used to rough out the tennon, and the slick used to trim it to final size.

The sizing was variable depending on who was doing it.  Varying by region, craftsman, and where in the structure the joint was.
