Handsaw re-hab?

whitedogstr8leg's picture

I have a pair of backsaws, both cheapo Stanley 14"  "Miter box saws.       Getting tired of the PLASTIC handles, blister making things.  So, went out to the shop ( Hey, it got up into the 50s!) and got a bit of old oak ready.  I laid out one handle as is, and a second handle a little different.     I then cut both out, and shaped them a bit.     Round-over bit, 4-in-1 rasps, regular rasps, a belt from a beltsander.   Drilled out for two sawnuts, and installed them.    The sawnuts came from a "Toolbox" handsaw.     I used that saw to cut a kerf for the blade to slide into.    I also got out a small chisel and chopped a slot for the blade's back to slide into.    Still needs a lot of sanding, and some sort of finish.

One saw "re-habbed" at least one more to go..  Photo #1 shows the before,  #2 shows a blank being cut out, #3 shows the blank installed.   Still needs to be finished up.

Just a few more photos of these saws,  yes, I said saws.   Two were re-habbed.    Shaped, sanded and stained.   Three bolt saw is a 14" backsaw, the two bolt one is a 12" backsaw.     Never be L-Ns, but these will do in my shop.
