If you had a gizmo that was (post #169657, reply #1 of 8)
If you had a gizmo that was slotted and the gizmo got pushed down a pipe a couple of inches you could thread this tool down through the slot point first till it was on the other side of the threaded gizmo and then give it a half turn so it was crosswise to the slot, then running the threaded handle down on the threads till it was tight across the neck of the pipe and, holding the threaded handle to keep it from turning, and turning the fixed handle, you could pull the gizmo up flush with the mouth of the pipe just like a cork puller.
Hope you got a good price, the brass and rosewood version sells for almost $400. up there at Lie Neilson's.

gizmo or shoe stretcher?
So it's a shoe stretcher?
Absolutely (post #169657, reply #4 of 8)
Wasn't allowed to get a picture in ;-( The split woodin pieces shaped like a foot are missing. They get hinged on the two back pegs and the pointy end, when screwed in, spreads the toe end of the streatcher.

I think you've got it! (post #169657, reply #5 of 8)
I think you are right, a shoe stretcher for making the toe part wider with a split wooden foot. I was beginning to have my doubts about it being a gizmo extractor anyway. I have been reading the "What is This?" section of This Old House mag too much. The monthly guessing game with silly answers.

Your confidence is re-assuring, Bruce. I'd hate to think that you had simply cobblered together an answer. ;-)

Ralph,
It takes a real heel to make a pun that bad. Have you no sole?

Chuckle. My convoluted brain just laces these things together, Ray.
