Hi Folks, As you run into forum bugs… please post a note here. And I’m not talking about upgrade, “nice-to-have” sort of features… but things that you’d think would work but don’t… For instance, I think that the “preview” function is broken when you post a comment. Instead of showing you a preview of your comment, it just refreshes the page. Updated: List of bugs to fix: -No email notifications of replies to posts or comments -Formatting tips should open in a new window -System is slow -Attachment problem when uploading something to a “comment” -Member page formatting problem. Skyscraper ad covers page content. NOTE: I’ve also started a separate post to track specific upgrade requests. So if you have a BUG to report, post it here. But, if you want to see an improvement report it on my upgrade request post. Thanks for the help. Gina Oops… I posted this under my alter-ego personality from the gardening site. Just testing to see what it looks like from an average user/not admin perspective.

Gina,
What I was about to post just vanished when I went to look at formatting options, so don't go there again
This is so slow, I could walk the dog between views, that'll make the dog happy
Spell check would be nice to have back
it just feels like a really cold place, kind of like a morgue

Good call on the formatting tips. Yes, that should open in a new window. I've amended my initial post to include that.
RE: slowness... it should be faster in the future.
Spell check. I'll add that to our future upgrade request list.
Gina, on the FWW members page, it's showing content from FHB.
Gina,
There is something buggy about the "upload a photo to your profile" function. I uploaded a picture, decided to change it, but it wouldn't go away in the edit profile tab. However, it was changed anywhere other members could see it.
Good luck.
Actually, the photo for the post above (the box I made my mom and that ran as a 4 part blog) isn't the picture that shows up on the members page (a shot you took while during the workbench video shoot). Strange. And perhaps not so strange that I would be concerned about something so vain!
Hi Matt, it might just take time. When I go to the members page now, your avatar looks updated. Thanks for reporting it.
This is what I see now:

But this was a good excercise. I tried to upload a photo to a comment and it didn't work:

Let me know if you folks experience the same thing. 128 KB is less than a MB right?

How do you attach photos? This one is 28kb.
Edit: Oh, this is wierd - I replied to Gina's post just above, so it appeared right below Gina's post, not at the very end!

If you already have a photo in your profile...
You need to check the "Delete Picture" box
>Scroll down and hit the save button
>Wait for the edit profile window to come back
>Now there should be no photo at all, showing. And you can add your new photo.

I have the same problem. I am posting a link to a screen shot of the floating "community" button.
Like boilerbay, I don't see any way to attach a picture.
I'm using a Mac with Firefox.

Gina,
When I click on the "Members" link, it takes me to the page, but in the fifth column, the top three profiles and half of the forth are covered by an ad banner. I'd post a picture, but I don't think I can. That's my only complaint, besides not being able to reply to a certain message. Otherwise, it will just take some getting used to!
Oh, and I find this box I type in too short, so the first thing I do is stretch it longer. I liked the big boxes of the good 'ol days!
Gina, the webpage address in my tagline doesn't become a link. Maybe I'm doing something wrong because I see that Chris' link does work...

Glad your here. Now about that French Oak...

Well, Chris' link has got a bunch of colors and funny fonts... Maybe mine is just too simple.
If you already mentioned the French Oak, one of the big lumber importers here just came out with a "new" item - they're calling it "African Oak", and trying to make a big fanfare. Of course I had to see what this nonsense is all about...Turns out it's plain old American Red Oak that's been fumed thru and thru. What'll they think of next?

David,
I didn't do anything to my signature since well before the changeover. I'm not certain, but I think that your link worked in the old forum.
"Slide show"?
Some apparently can view multiple images enlarged as a sequence. All I get is the single image. Have to go back to each image and enlarge. Is this a platform issue? Windows vs. Mac?
On Mac with Firefox 3.5.6

I have both FF and Safari. The slideshow is there you just have to know then is more than one image. In the lower left corner it will tell Image 4 of 5 or which ever image you selected. Then you find the directional arrow near the top of either the left or right border and select to move to the next image. If you are on the first image there will not be a go left arrow. It would be nicer to have NEXT and PREV arrows displayed always. At least the images do not resize so your cursor stay at the same spot.

Gina,
I'm not sure if this is just me, but on screen on the "Members" page, ad copy overwrites the member photos and links on the right side of the page.

It's not just you. I use Firefox and I'm getting the same thing. If the photos could overwrite the ads it would be better...

Gina,
Just noticed a black bounded yellow warning box briefly flashed below your thread titled "Welcome to the new knots...
Box said "increasing cache count for this thread"
Is that something we are supposed to see? Bug?
When I click on "Ask the Experts" I get returned to the Knots home page. I'm running Windows XP Pro and Firefox on a PC.
Generally speaking I'm finding the whole process of changing to the new site very much like the experience I had when I started a new job after 20 years of using PCs only to find that the entire company ran on Macs! It took a few days to get comfortable but it wasn't a life altering experience. I think this will work out much the same. . .

Ron
Something screwy with the clock.
The last reply to a thread I started was last night and the thread heading says 58 minutes ago.
Cheers, Don
This is an oldy, but goody. Automatic log in is not working. However, now you can view the posts without loging in, you just don't seem to be able to reply or post. THis has been a bud in some form for awhile. IT is a real pain and makes using more dificult.
FWIW, Dan, I access the FWW home page first. The login there appears to take care of the login for Knots. That may, however, just be a difference in the cookie expiration date/time.
Ralph,
When I auto log on to knots and then go to main, I have to re-log on, but when I auto log in main site and then go to knots, the log on holds.
Go figure
I don't think they have even started addressing the log on problem. Probably the least of their worries.

Gina,
Just noticed a lot of replies as "new" in one of the threads today, which were not there yesterday. They are all posts from before the changeover. Is data still being migrated or is the "new" alert a bug.
Thanks
BB
when i try to edit my profile it gives me a message that my e-mail address is not available
problem solved
Similar problem here...
Gina,
I made several revisions to one post I made. The first three worked fine, and on the forth, I got this message:
Access denied
You are not authorized to access this page.
Have noticed ,when going to "next" page on string of posts "Open letter to Taunton’s Forum Users" thread, the OP appears again at start of continuing responses. Bug or Design ?
If design, when OP takes of a lot of visual space, it chews up response space. For me it's a bug.

Gina,
Have noticed under "activity" in "My Profile", my list of posts go back 29 pages but only to 1 year. What has happened to previous years and how do I gain access to them?
Bug or design?
BB
It seems that unless Google Syndication cookie is allowed, auto log on of FWW.COM Home site is blocked? Is this a bug or do Home site uses have to give Google tracking privileges in order to log on? Or is it just that Home site is on a different server accessing yet another server for id? In other words, is the log on at different levels still a bug to be fixed?
Thanks
BB
Gina,
This morning, for some reason, NO posts are marked as new, though the forum list on the list says there are new posts. Makes it really hard to figure out what you have and have not read. This just started today.
Search question;
Either it is not working or I'm not doing it right. I typed 1 word in the search text box and got no results. the word was actually in a topic title. did this twice with no results found.
How do I search a specific forum?
I ended up in the general forums section after clicking on a FWW product review link entitled "Rockler - 4-in. Dust Hose Fitting." I was hoping to get to add my own 2 cents about aformentioned product, but instead ended up in the forums TOC page. I feel like I made a wrong turn somewhwere and ended up on a dead-end street. What gives?
Several times, including just now, I have linked to the "(# New)" in a thread only to discover,
a. there aren't any marked new or
B. one out of "posted 5 or whatever" is marked and since they are not in chronological order it is impossible to find out which is new without looking at each post's time code.
RE: Member FAQ;
"Do I get to keep my old screen name and profile information in the new system?"
Yes. All profile and screen name data will be preserved."
What happened to member post counts? (number of)
Thankx
Boiler

I don't know if this is
Gina
I don't know if this is something you call a bug, or something else. Since I don't know where else to report it, I'll post it here and hope for the best.
Since there really is no descending order of posts, the only way to rely on reading new posts in a thread is by looking at the area that says (5 new). However, I try to find those (5 new) within the content of the thread, and they don't exist. I'm relying on the little red "new" signal in the upper left hand side of the new post, but only found 1 (most recently).
In other words, as threads get longer, it is getting more and more difficult to find the new threads, especially if they don't exist in the content.
Is this the only way to track "new" posts, because as these threads get to be 50 to 100 plus posts long, it is really slow and time consuming to find the new posts, if you can find them at all.

Gina,
When viewing Member Profiles, they come up in five columns. The fifth column (furthest right) of member profiles is hidden behind the advertising column.

Here at Knots (not yet at Breaktime....) there is a function that might be useful, if it worked properly.
In the left column, I can click on "My Profile". From the profile page, I can click on the "Activity" tab.
That "Activity" page is supposed to show all of the topics in which I've participated.
It doesn't.

This box, right now.
In new message, comment box has pull down at bottom to view more text. In "Reply", it doesn't appear to.
MAC/ Firefox 3.5.6
In the Forum Status box, it says:
"Fixed Bugs:
1. You can now see what's "new." View the latest posts and replies, or browse the list on the left of every page.
2. Receive alerts on comments to your posts. Go to "My Profile" and change the settings for "Comment Follow Up Notifications" in the "Edit" tab. "
#1 is somewhat helpful, but not a replacement for seeing "replies to me". And, there may be a question of whether all recent replies are actually being shown.
#2 ("Comment Follow Up Notifications") doesn't show in my profile (yet?).
The additional fields for Comment Follow Up Notifications finally showed up, so problem solved. Thanks.
Photos in posts.(slide show)
Have noticed it's a one way slide show in that starting with the first one, they are progressive but looking at the last one first is a dead end. no backward progression.
New message function is only working intermittently. It worked up until the last few days and then kaput.

I'm posting these not as a complaint, but to inform you of two bugs, at least for me.
1. The "new" function is not working for me. Sometimes, threads I've already read completely are showing up as "new", and other threads that I've not read at all show no new replies.
2. I have checked the correct boxes for email notification, but am still not receiving an email, even though someone has replied, both to me AND in the thread.
Happy Holidays,
Jeff
Mac users can resize the "Comment" window when in enter mode, Windows users cannot.
test
This has been noted in other posts elsewhere but not here - It seems when you start a new thread you must use an unused name or your thread vanishes and is replaced by an older thread of same name.
Am I being clear as mud again?
I cannot delete my existing picture and/or replace it with a new picture. I have tried checking the delete box without adding a new picture as well as deleting and adding a new picture at the same time.
I also get what appears to be an error meesage telling me that my email address is already registered when I try to save changes to my profile.
Top left corner is overlaying words community and classifieds. Why do I have to log In several times? Could the make a comment section be near the top instead of scrolling throught all that has been scrolled? College Educated but still needs a spell checker please!!!! And just for giggles I have always been akin to a different colour scheme
Craig
This site, like it's hard
This site, like it's hard copy siblings has a lot of great information but the forum is about the hardest and least sensible of any forum I've seen on the internet. There's not even an FAQ on the home page. And I guess the Feb. 11 update didn't work - you still can't edit comments in the blog section. There also doesn't seem to be any way to edit user names or even remove oneself from membership. I'm just amazed that a company with the resources which can produce the kind of content that is and has been so impressive for so many years can't seem to get it's act together in website and forum navigation.
Trying to follow up to a reply to a post that I originated in "Wood & Materials" gets me a "triggered the spam filter" rejection. I can't tell what I need to do to post follow up reply to my own post?
Try logging out, then clear your cookies for the site, then log back in. The behavior of the CAPTCHA "spam filter" as implemented here is, well, let's say "random".
Spam Trigger
Hi, I tried several times today to post a question and each time I get the message that the post is refused because it triggered the spam filter. I understand that I can be put on a "by-pass" list? If so, please do so or provide some other fix.
Thanks

Getting blocked by the spam filter
Hi :) I'm a new member to the forum and just tried to put up my first post, but the system says I was blocked by the spam filter. I can't see any reason this might have happened (and I'm pretty certain my post doesn't contain any flags- at least that I can see). Am I doing something wrong or what else can I do to participate in the forum?
Google Custom Search not working
I once was able to post my inquiry to Knots after logging in, such as "jointers" in the search area and ALL prior posts with the phrase "jointers" would come up and I would proceed to pick and choose any or all of them. Now, when I fill in the Google search area I get an error stating "Unauthorized access to internal API. Please refer to http:// (more words)....4542055. What the heck is that? I tracked down FW customer Service and they said "Unfortunately, Knots is not an actively monitored or curated site and it looks like the Google search is broken. We don't know when it can be fixed". Has anyone else experienced this and knows how I can get detailed info using Google search in Knots? I have a DELL Inspiron 15 computer loaded with Microsoft 10 and do NOT have Google Chrome, just basic Google. Please help. Thanks.
