Problems with an old article
Page 2 of the PDF of this article:
http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/ToolGuide/ToolGuidePDF.aspx?id=2062
has many (important!) lines of text missing. Is there any way to flag articles as having mangled PDFs so that they can get fixed (rescanned, whatever)?
Thanks,
Mark.

Where are they missing? I scanned it, paying closest attention to the beginning and end, but didn't notice anything wrong. My old eyes?

Ah -- if it looks OK to you, then I should probably try another PDF reader (I used Preview on a MAC). I'll try Acrobat on a PC and see if that makes a difference,
Thanks!
Mark.

I opened it in Internet Explorer, but when I open in a reader I use Fox-It -- way less bulky than Acrobat, a quick download. Just an FYI, in case you hadn't heard of it.

Acrobat on XP worked fine. Good to know.
Thanks for the tip!

FG,
You should send Taunton a bill for your services!

I agree! And Taunton should have a link to Foxit if they are going to use pdf files. Adobe makes some of the most intrusive, bloated junk software out there.

Do you use FoxIt too, Don?? I've had a problem installing an add-on, the JPEG2/JBIG Decoder, so there are a few documents out there that aren't working for me. Have you instaled that add-on??

I've not tried any of the add-ons. I like to keep it lean and fast. Have you come across embedded jpegs in pdf's?

I downloaded and tried to open a WWing plan from somewhere (ahhh, the mind goes first) the other day, and it wouldn't open with images because they were the new type that requires the add-on. BTW: It' less than 200 KB, hardly a heavy add-on.

Just in the interest of having their content easily accessible. I would'nt mind seeing a link section with links to their advertisers and other products useful to woodworkers too.

Don,

Now that would be nice! I realize that in the mag. the advertisers usually have their WEBsites in the ads if they have one but you're right. It would help everyone and reinforce their commitment to their advertisers as well.
Along the lines of Freeware have you used pdf995? Great way to create/edit .PDF files from any application as it's basically a printer driver, for lack of a better description. There are addons that give it a lot of flexibility.

Don,
It wouldn't be appropriate to put a link to Foxit. Since the PDF format is owned by Adobe. The only link that would be appropriate would be to Adobe Acrobat.
However, I agree with you about the advertisers and other products.

The PDF format is now an ISO standard. Probably Adobe don't care about the readers - theirs is free anyway. They make their money from the creation software, where they have a long headstart over the competition.
The PDF format is now so free and open that OpenOffice can actually write PDF files. I use this feature a lot so that I can distribute documents which are more or less platform agnostic.

Here's the link to our Advertiser's Index:
http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/pages/fw_adindex.asp
It's not the easiest thing to find. On the homepage, click on the magazine cover, then click on the "Advertiser Index" link in the subnavigation on that page.

Hi Mark,
Sounds like you've received good advice from other Knots members (thanks folks for chiming in!)
Yes, Foxit's is a good suggestion. Or just download the latest version of Adobe and that should sort out the weird formatting: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html
