Washington Woodworkers Guild
I always thought this club was in DC but now I understand it meets in VA. Any members out there who can tell me about traffic and parking at the meetings? I would be coming from the Sterling area of Loudoun County and I am retired. In fifty years I have never had to travel in rush hour traffic (if only it was an hour) but I think driving to meetings would be going against the evening rush. Any other general info about the guild from members would be nice too. Great website by the way.

Swenson, I am a long
Swenson,
I am a long time member of the Washington Woodworkers Guild. Perhaps I could help. You can see the WWG website at:
http://www.washingtonwoodworkersguild.org/
Meetings are normally held on the third Tuesday of the month (except August) at 7:30pm at the Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads.
The address is 3440 S. Jefferson St, Falls Church, VA 22041 The phone number at Goodwin House is 703 820 1488.
Directions:
From 495 take 395 North to 7 West exit. Proceed approximately 2 miles on Route 7 to South Jefferson Street, and turn right. Proceed one block on South Jefferson Street.
Sterling is not that far away. Let me know if you have any questions. If you'd like, we can trade private emails with contact information.
Hope to see you at the WWG.
Mel

WWG
Great. You suggested looking for a guild in a different thread and never saw my post so here it is:
There is a guild nearby. The website looks good. I just spent thirty years working 2pm to midnight so there was no way I could ever make evening meetings of any kind of club for any of my interests. Now that I'm retired things are different. I just found out that the Washington Woodworkers Guild doesn't meet in DC at all, but in VA. When soneone at a LN tool event mentioned joining the guild I didn't know this and Just didn't feel like running down to DC after doing that every day since 1960. I understand that they don't meet this month at all but I plan on a visit in September. I always thought guilds were like unions but I guess that the meaning has changed since I was young. I'm already in too many unions... AFTRA, IATSE, NABIT, CWA,
marriage. I've been out of the shop for two weeks, weeding beds and mulching, almost done. Take care.So I will see you all there with the aid of my trusty GPS. Thanks for the info.
S, "Guild" is a misnomer.
S,
"Guild" is a misnomer. The WWG is a bunch of old guys with a heavy interest in woodworking. All different interests, so it keeps things moving. Lots of different skills. No troublemakers. Just a lot of talking about woodwork. We have a speaker a month, except for August. December is a party and we bring tools to sell or trade. Once a year, there is a contest. Everyone gets one entry. There is only one category - "Stuff". Each person talks about his piece and votes.
Don' worry about Unions. No Unions here. Just the people who breath too much wood dust and us hand tool workers.
If it turns out that the traffic is bad when you try to get to the meeting on time, you can always drive to my place earlier in the afternoon. We can spend a few hours making a Chippendale easy chair or something, and then cook something up on the grill and then go to the meeting. There shouldn't be any traffic on the way home from the meeting. The meetings are quite enjoyable. Let me know if you have any questions. Looking forward to meeting you in person.

Thanks for the kind offer. I'm just being paranoid about traffic, it won't be a problem. Old age makes us worry about rush hour, and living in the DC area doesn't help. It's a sad state when you start to think of everything in terms of parking and traffic... oh, wait a minute, DC isn't a state, but it is sad. See you at the meeting.
Oh, and thanks a lot for goading me into a reply on Hand Tools Naive question about planes Too late at night and too much wine.
S, I gotta tell ya -
S,
I gotta tell ya - finding the Goodwin house, in which the WWG has its meetings is not easy. The first time I went there, I drove past the street four times, and then I had difficulty finding the place, BUT I WAS NOT SUFFICIENTLY PREPARED. I highly recommend that you either use a GPS device for driving directions, or that you make a detailed map before you go.
A KEY LANDMARK is that there is an OLIVE GARDEN Restaurant on the corner at which you make the turn off of the main road onto the street on which the Goodwin house is on. When you get on that final street, you go past the Giant Food store, and the Goodwin house is on the same side of the street as the Giant.
Once you see where those two turns are, the place is easy to find. But if you have a GPS or a map, it is easy, and knowing the Olive Garden is on the corner really helped me.
If you want, come down to my house in the afternoon, and I can show you how to get to the Goodwin house after we cook some burgers on the grill. Sorry, I don't have any Holtey's for you to try. If you want my address and phone number, just write me a private message on Knots.

Thanks for the kind offer.
Was not sure if our command attendance at "Grandparents day" at my grand daughter's school would conflict with the WWG meeting as her school is in Maine, but now it looks like we will be leaving to go north one or two days after the meeting. I'll try the private message thing at the end of this week when I'm locked in. Have to run down to Richmond first though.
