Chicago Woodworking Club

melb's picture

Anybody know of or interested in starting a woodworking club on Chicago's North Shore?

I live in Evanston and have a nice workshop.  Looking for others with similar interest.

I am in Buffalo Grove and would love to find a club closer than the Fox Valley or Milwaukee. Maybe we could find a place in Skokie or Northbrook or Morton Grove or somewhere between you and me, which may cover a lot of woodworkers, to have meetings. Feel free to email me at dave@cohn1.com or respond on the list if you are interested.

I would help you do the club stuff if this is feasible. I would think we could meet at one of the libraries for meetings but if we wanted to do demos we would need a shop.

I am a hobbyist and work in my basement. We could meet here but I have no space for much of a crowd. Perhaps we could get one of the woodworking places to help sponsor us, like Woodcraft or Owl Hardwood or one of the other places. I came upon this place while searching for some place to help us. Check them out, they look interesting. http://www.horiganufp.com/hardwoodInventory.html

Greg:

I told Dave that I've got a decent-sized (14x20) workshop that's well-stocked and a very tolerant wife.  We can meet here or up at one of your places and see if we get along and have similar interests.

this works for me. How about if we see if we can get some publicity and perhaps shoot for a meeting somewhere in about two to three weeks.Do we have any ideas on what we would do in the club and how we can structure the club? If not, we look and call some of the other clubs and see what they do to get some ideas.

I can go to Owl Hardwood and Woodcraft this week one day and see if I can get them to put up a brochure or hand out a flyer. Perhaps you guys can find another place to advertise the meeting (like the place I emailed you last nite, Mel) so we get as much coverage as possible.

Is there a nite that works okay for both of you guys? I would say Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday work better for me. I will be happy to go to Evanston if that's what we decide.

Feel free to email me directly or go through the list.

Thursday is a good night for me if it works for Greg (though, not this coming Thursday since I've got a work event).  We can discuss agenda for the club when we meet, but, personally, I'm not looking for a charter that's any more binding than an interest in woodworking.  I've seen other clubs that pick a particular project that each person builds his own version of --getting together to work on design issues and help each other.  I've even read about clubs that bring in a teacher to work with them (there was a club in the Northeast that built chippendale breakfronts and had a  cabinetmaker than ran a master class once a month as they were building).  Options are endless.

I'm of moderate ability --but, then again, if I were an expert, I'd probably not need the counsel of other club members.

If it works for you and Greg, we can meet at my house tentatively Thursday, Feb 5th

If we get along then we'll discuss where we want to go with this

Joe:

I don't see any problem with changing the night if everyone agrees.  Would next Wednesday night work for everybody?

Wednesday, February 4 works great for me too. However I am out of town from this Thursday until next Monday so I won't be able to get to the wood places in town. Can we go out another week and try for Wednesday, February 11? This may give us more time to try and recruit people as well.

I found this trend and was interested in joining your club.  I live in the Barrington area and Buffalo Grove is close for me but not Evanston.  Any chance that the meeting can be closer to our area?

I just came across this topic. I'm new to the area and live in Wilmette. Is this group still active?
