Can someone point me to furniture shops that can build a dining table, chairs and perhaps breakfast table for me? In 07090 and can pick up within NJ and parts of PA and NY. Need craftsman with photos of work posted to website. Not having a lot of luck finding anyone good and wanting something more than available at Ethan Allen....

What type of table and chairs are you looking for?
Species? Style?

Go to the New Hampshire Furniture Masters website http://www.furnituremasters.org/ and pick any of the craftsmen in the group and you can't miss. All are professionals and will create more than you imagine. Most will also deliver the furniture to you and many pitures of their work are on the site.

What is it that whenever someone is looking to have a piece of Furniture made do, you feel the need to refer them to the New Hampshire Furniture Makers?
If you can't supply the requested product yourself, why not keep to yourself?
Or are you hoping that you can buy your way into their group?

I don't recall refering anyone to them in the past but maybe I did. Is there something wrong with suggesting to someone that they seek out a professional with the credentials to do the work they require. I don't see how giving someone their contact info will somehow buy me into the group, especially since I am on the West Coast; a bit far to be a part of the party don't you think?
Also, since the original poster specifically asked "Can someone point me to furniture shops that can build a dining table, chairs and perhaps breakfast table for me?" and not 'can someone tell me how wonderful their own personal work is so I can buy something directly from them rather than from a reputable group of craftsmen.' I guess I can read and just answered the question that was asked.

Bob,
It is not the only time you have suggested someone seek out the NH Furniture Group. I am not sure why you would send everyone in that direction. There are a lot of Craftsmen/women who are on his site a lot, who perhaps could use the work during this economic turmoil. The members of this group we have here in this community called "Knots" are a very talented bunch for the most part. The only reason I didn't throw my name in the hat is that I am book through next summer. And some how have to find time to get my new shop up in the air and get moved. So I have more than enough on my plate at the moment.
I just wonder what your thoughts were as to why you make these referalls in that direction? The majority of the members of that group are into Period style furniture. Also they have a very secure following for commisions.
If your on the West Coast why not promote the strugling Artisan out there. Northwest Fine Woodworking is fighting to stay afloat as we speak. If you are not familiar with them visit there web site. They are some of the best woodworkers around. Such as Gray, Spangler & Holtzer, and a lot of otherswho are members of the co-op. As a matter of fact David Gray is featured in the current issue of E-Zine. And yes I am partial to there group as a lot of them such as Gray are Alumni of the same woodworking school that I attended in Seattle.
I guess I just feel that unless a person can recommend someone from a first hand relationship to make a general referral like that, isnt fair to the people here that could perhaps do a wonderful job, and could perhaps really need the work right now.

Taigert,
Not to continue this discussion any further than necessary but in the interest of clarity I looked back through my previous posts and I can't find where I have ever recommended NHFM nor where I ever even discussed them here. Maybe you have me confused with someone else or maybe they just don't come up when I search.
Also, I didn't at any point say that I don't know the craftsmen in NHFM, that was your assumption, I just said I am on the West Coast now. And once again, maybe you should read the OP again as the person is on the East Coast and wants to pick up the furniture on the East Coast. Can you do that from the West Coast or from Northwest, I can't. Perhaps they want to go into the persons shop and see the work under construction, once again not so easy from the West Coast.
I still don't see what you have against NHFM, do you honestly think the economy only has impact on the West Coast. Personally I would think a group like Northwest would have a much more secure line to commissions, since they have their own gallery. I don't know of many other groups, NHFM included, that have that advantage, and it is a huge advantage regardless of the cost.
I am glad you have so much work, it is unfortunate that you also have enough free time to waste here on pointless discussions where you are obviously incorrect in your statements. I don't have anything against the Knots group but as I don't know any of them personally I wouldn't recommend any of them for anything regardless of what they post here on this forum. Go back to work and stop wasting my time with this please.

At least one of the discussants in this matter should brush up on third grade pronoun spelling.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but am I correct to believe that you think just because someone belongs to a group that they are some how a better designer/ furniture maker than those that don't. We are all out trying to make a living. So when a person places an ad looking for someone to build them some furniture, I wouldn't say that responding to that ad is shameless self promotion. It is self promotion, but that's how we all get work. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with anyone recommending anyone for a job. But to believe that one is more reputable and reliable because they are a member of a group is just wrong.

Kaleo,
Are you trying to say that you didn't just go down under to go diving, surfing.
I hope all is going well for you and your family since coming back to Stateside. I have been trying to follow your work when I get a chance. Every thing is looking good!
You know I normally try keep my mouth shut, but some times that burr under my saddle just gets to me. Sorry if I offended anyone. Sometimes I just get thinking about how a lot of us busted our butts, and dumped all the money we could scrape together to go to school. I guess some people think we just play with wood to kill time and have fun.
Keep up the good work,
Taigert

Having a daughter and her family in 07090, you should consider these very fine woodworkers, in no priority order:
Chuck Bender, East Coventry, PA, http://www.acanthus.com/
Alan Turner and Mario Rodriguez, Philadelaphia, PA, http://www.philadelphiafurnitureworkshop.com/
various individuals and groups http://www.custommade.com/geosearch/PA.html
A bunch of great woodworkers to choose from.
